Reloading Primers

The four primer types are pistol, rifle, rifle magnum, and pistol magnum. The main difference amongst these primer types is the amount of heat they generate. Large rifle magnum primers create a long-lasting hot spark, which is suitable for igniting spherical powders such as ball powder. Large rifle magnum primers are the most important component of any rifle, since without the right primer, the powder would not ignite, and the bullet would not exit the barrel.

Any large primer, such as the large rifle primer, is used in cartridges with larger case capacities, or in any other situation in which difficulties may be presented during the ignition of the gun powder. Some instances in which a large rifle magnum primer would be called for would include use in cold temperatures or with gun powder that is difficult to ignite. The main advantage that large rifle magnum primers have over other primers is the immense heat they produce in a short amount of time, which is able to ignite any gun powder.

Although large rifle magnum primers are generally recommended for the aforementioned situations, it is always best to consult with your reloading manual before using any primer or other reloading supplies.

Large rifle magnum primers are usually not needed for light-mid range loads, since these loads are generally easy to ignite.  Frequently, you’ll need to work with a combination of various powders and primers to achieve the best results. These combinations are often referred to as recipes, and they are usually outlined in reloading manuals.

Large rifle magnum primers are made to create hotter, longer-lasting sparks in two ways. A standard chemical mix is used to create a flame that burns longer, or a custom mix is used that produce more a flame that burns with more tenacity in a shorter period of time.

Using large rifle magnum primers in the wrong kinds of cartridges with the inappropriate gun powder can definitely cause dangerously high firing pressures. Therefore, when it comes to your reloading supplies, it is imperative that you heed the advice of the reloading manual before firing ammunition using any primer, regardless of your previous experience. Large rifle magnum primer is generally used in situations that present difficulty igniting the gun powder, such as large capacity cases, cold temperature, or spherical gun powder.
